When he was only 10 years old, Dr. C.D. Cooke began working at a local boarding and grooming facility in his hometown of Terre Haute. At age 11, he was introduced to the medical world when he needed to have a kidney removed. After meeting a few local veterinary professionals during high school, Dr. Cooke’s mind was made up: he wanted to become a veterinarian!
Dr. Cooke attended Purdue University for his undergraduate studies and veterinary degree. Upon returning to Terre Haute after graduation, he purchased a boarding and grooming property and converted it into a veterinary hospital. Along with his wife, Dr. Cooke opened Heritage Animal Hospital’s North location in the summer of 1976, then opened Heritage Animal Hospital South in August of 1980.
Dr. Cooke has one pet of his own at home: Maggie, a 90-pound Doberman pinscher who goes everywhere with him. When he isn’t spending time with Maggie or tending to his duties here at the clinic, Dr. Cooke is an avid coin collector and hopes to one day pass his collection on to his children.
Both of Dr. Jessica Cooke’s parents are veterinarians—growing up in her household, it wasn’t hard for young Dr. Cooke to fall in love with veterinary medicine! As she progressed through her education, she realized she had a passion for interacting with clients and advising them on the best possible care for their furry friends. Dr. Cooke is truly living her dream by working alongside her father here at Heritage Animal Hospital South.
A Terre Haute native, Dr. Cooke attended Indiana University for her undergraduate degree in biology, then earned her DVM degree from Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. She started here at the hospital later that year. Dr. Cooke’s professional interests include client education, surgery, and ophthalmology. She says if she had to choose a particular niche within veterinary medicine, she’d become a veterinary ophthalmologist! Dr. Cooke is also starting to delve into the business side of veterinary work.
Dr. Cooke enjoys speaking to children about her profession. She also loves spending time at the lake, traveling, trying new foods, and spending time with her two dogs– Puppy and Possum.
